Octave template fits neatly over the Graffiti area on your Palm. Octave, once enabled, takes over the zone on the digitizer surface under the star and the button areas. The zones to the left of the Octave input zone(letters) and the right (numbers), can still be used for entering single Graffiti characters.
The plastic star Template is needed in order to use Octave to its full potential. The template helps you gain speed in text input by guiding the pen into one of the eight points of the star corresponding to various groups of letters.
To enter words, letters or numbers, you move your pen inside the 8-pointed star. In order to enter a word, you "spell out" the word by visiting in turn the star points corresponding to the letters that form the word, without raising the pen.
As you move from point to point, Octave proposes its best guess corresponding to the sequence of points so far visited. As soon as the desired word appears in the Octave display window, just raise your pen to validate it, and send it to the underlying application.
The 26 letters of the alphabet as well as some selected symbols (apostrophe, dash, dot and "@") are grouped together according to a feature common to each of the letters in any given group.
These basic features have been used to define eight easily remembered symbols that are printed onto the star template.
